Environment Day Celebration Report

Introduction & Purpose

Background

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, Suma Blessings Foundation organized a tree plantation drive to contribute towards environmental conservation and to spread awareness among children and the community regarding sustainable living. The event was held in Dwarka Sector 12 Park and was conducted under the supervision of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). We obtained prior written permission for carrying out the plantation activity at this public location.

Objective

The aim of the initiative was to:

• Promote environmental responsibility among students and local residents
• Increase green cover in urban spaces
• Educate students about native and medicinal plant species
• Encourage volunteerism and community engagement

Execution & Participation

Tree Plantation Activity

A total of 100 saplings were planted across designated areas of the park. The MCD provided support in identifying suitable planting spots and ensuring proper follow-up care. The saplings included a mix of native, shade-providing, and medicinal plant species, such as:

• Arjun (Terminalia arjuna): Known for its cardiovascular medicinal value
• Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi): A herb with digestive benefits
• Baheda (Terminalia bellirica): A component of the Ayurvedic ‘Triphala’
• Bakain (Melia azedarach): Natural pest-repellent properties
• Lasora (Cordia dichotoma): A fruit-bearing tree with medicinal bark
• Nagdon (Euphorbia tithymaloides): An air-purifying plant
• Peepal (Ficus religiosa): Considered sacred, excellent oxygen provider
• Pilkhan (Ficus virens): Large canopy tree beneficial for biodiversity
• Stevia: A natural zero-calorie sweetener plant

Participation

• Around 30 students from Suma Vidyalaya took part as enthusiastic volunteers. They
  were briefed on each plant’s ecological importance and taught the correct method of
  planting and watering.
• Additional community volunteers and members of the Foundation supported the
  students and helped manage logistics and plant distribution.
• All participants were provided with, water bottles, and hand tools to ensure safe
  handling during the activity.

Volunteer Coordination

A dedicated team of volunteers was appointed for:

• Transporting the saplings
• Digging and preparing the soil
• Guiding the planting process
• Post-plantation watering and clean-up

Impact & Reflection

Impact Achieved

• Environmental Contribution: 100 plants added to an urban green space, contributing to air purification, shade, and biodiversity.
• Youth Awareness: Students developed a deeper understanding of environmental conservation and the importance of native trees.
• Community Engagement: Built a positive rapport between the Foundation and the local community, with appreciation from nearby residents and onlookers.
• Partnership with MCD: Strengthened collaboration with municipal authorities for future eco-projects.
• Visibility & Reach: The event was documented with photographs and short videos,
  which were shared on our social media handles. Initial analytics show high engagement in terms of likes, shares, and positive comments.

Way Forward

We plan to:

• Revisit the site in 3 months for plant health assessment
• Engage students in a “tree guardian” initiative to monitor the growth
• Continue seasonal plantation drives across other sectors in Dwarka
