Pitru Paksha, also known as Pitri Paksha or Shradh Paksha, is a sacred 16-day lunar period in the Hindu calendar dedicated to paying homage to one’s ancestors. During this time, families perform Shradh rituals and offer food (pind daan and anna daan) in remembrance of their forefathers. Charity performed during Shradh, especially feeding the poor and needy, is considered extremely auspicious and believed to bring peace to the departed souls while invoking blessings of health, prosperity, and harmony for the family.
Shradh is traditionally performed on the Tithi (lunar date) of the ancestor’s death within Pitru Paksha. If the exact Tithi is not known, Shradh can be performed on Sarvapitri Amavasya, the concluding day of Pitru Paksha. This day is regarded as the most powerful and universally beneficial, ensuring that offerings reach all departed ancestors.
